Co-MC: Valerie

Valerie (she/they) takes their day-job as a scientist very seriously, except when they're doing science comedy, which is most of the time. Her geeky and musical antics have been described as "Garfunkel and Oats meets Hank Green" and "Queer Weird Al." Her biggest comedy achievement is performing at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2018. After moving to Seattle in that same year, she founded "Geeky Comedy Seattle,” which she considers to be her second greatest achievement. You can now find Valerie performing, singing, and producing geeky content wherever they'll let her.

Nyx

Fungus-lesque

Science

Nic's work in art, science communication, and social justice thinks about the ways we might reach for one another rather than wait for technofixes from above, much like how mycelial networks connect trees to one another? How can the arts rehumanize and resensitize the sciences? What can we learn from sitting in the muck, embracing our entanglement, and letting old systems compost. How can we hyphenate and grow our own mycelial networks to transform the world into something new, something better?

Bio

Previously Mx. Nyx--now newly-minted Dr. Nyx invites you to relate to our fungal brethren. Mesmerizing, mycological, and multi-hyphenate--let's explore what it means to succumb to something larger than all of us.

Sasha Southend

First Light

Science

Sasha is representig the work of PhD student Nicole Kerrison, who is interested in the chemical and physical evolution of the early solar system. She combines a theoretical and experimental approach to characterize calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs), the first solids to have formed in the solar system. This characterization effort will lead to a better understanding of the thermodynamic environment in which CAIs aggregated.

Co-MC: Posie D’Lish

Burning Desires: Embracing the Heat of Climate Reality

Science

Over a century of aggressive fire suppression policies aimed at protecting human settlements and valuable timber resources have disrupted natural fire regimes, leading to the accumulation of dense vegetation and fuel loads in forests. This buildup of fuel has created conditions ripe for catastrophic wildfires, which are further intensified by the impacts of climate change, including higher temperatures, prolonged droughts, and altered precipitation patterns. Consequently, wildfires today burn with greater intensity, frequency, and scale, posing significant challenges for ecosystems, communities, and firefighting efforts alike. Addressing these intertwined issues requires a multifaceted approach that includes both proactive forest management strategies and concerted global action to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Bio

Posie D'Lish made a dazzling debut onto the burlesque scene in 2022 with the Tucson Libertine League, seamlessly intertwining her passion for science with the art of seduction. By day, she delves into the world of science communication and environmental education. Posie harnesses the power of burlesque to spotlight LGBTQ representation in STEM, producing shows that boldly challenge conventions and celebrate diversity in both science and performance art. As a queer polyamorous femme, she makes her home in the Sonoran Desert with her partner, two fantastic children, a menagerie of animals and almost every craft supply known to woman.
